Arms CoolSculpting – Upper Arm Fat Reduction
A common problem area we treat at Tracey Bell, is the upper arms. Some clients report that this has always been a problem and that “fat arms run in the family”. Others say that they didn’t really have the problem until they put on a few extra pounds. Many clients say they don’t even wear sleeveless shirts for this reason.
So, how do you reduce arm fat? Regardless of the reason a person has an accumulation of arm fat, CoolSculpting can be a great non-invasive way to reduce the arms, give them a more defined contour and help them regain the confidence to wear sleeveless shirts again.
Am I a candidate for Arms CoolSculpting?
When we evaluate clients here at Tracey Bell, who present for treatment of the arm, we pay careful attention to how much fat is in the area vs. the amount of skin laxity of the upper arm.
Occasionally we do find clients that have too much skin laxity for CoolSculpting and would be better served by a different procedure. This is why it is so important to have an evaluation.
The price of CoolSculpting of the arms depends on the size and number of applicators that are needed to properly treat the area. Most patients will need one or two small applicators (or one larger applicator) to treat each of the upper arms.
Multi-applicator and multi-session treatment discounts may apply. More than one treatment session may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
F A Q
Coolsculpting is a FDA-approved non-invasive fat reduction procedure which uses cryolipolysis to freeze fat cells in targeted troublesome bulges. After the freezing of the cells, they die and disintegrate which allows them to be flushed from the body naturally causing a natural-looking fat loss from particular areas of the body with stubborn fat deposits.
WHY IS COOLSCULPTING PERFORMED?
Inpiduals seek out Coolsculpting treatments in order to get rid of excess fat on their body and obtain a more ideal body shape. Coolsculpting allows patients to shrink stubborn fat deposits that cannot be targeted through diet and exercise. With this treatment, the fat cells are frozen and then are flushed out of the body naturally resulting in a sculpted and thinner figure.
HISTORY / ORIGIN OF COOLSCULPTING:
The idea of Coolsculpting first came to Dermatologists Dieter Manstein, MD, PhD, and R. Rox Anderson, MD, in 2008 when they wrote a scientific paper on the relation between the cold and fat reduction. They first thought of this by noticing that dimples formed on children’s cheeks who ate a lot of popsicles and decided to set out to prove the hypothesis that fat cells can be frozen. The result of this research was the invention of Coolsculpting.
WHEN TO HAVE COOLSCULPTING
Coolsculpting is advised for inpiduals who are within 20 to 30 pounds of their goal weight but have particularly stubborn fat deposits that cannot be rid from the body with regular diet and exercise methods. Coolsculpting is not advised for inpiduals who are overweight or obese as it is a fat removal procedure and not a weight loss treatment. Patients with deep visceral fat within the abdomen are better off with pursuing weight loss and exercise.
QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE GETTING COOLSCULPTING:
IS COOLSCULPTING RIGHT FOR ME?
Coolsculpting works best for inpiduals who have a healthy diet and exercise regimen but have stubborn pockets of fat that they would like to get rid of. The treatment is ideal for inpiduals who are within twenty pounds of their goal weight rather than those who are overweight or obese. The treatment is not meant for actual weight loss. If you can pinch your fat in your fingers, then you’re likely a candidate.
DOES COOLSCULPTING LAST?
Coolsculpting results last and are permanent when you take good care of your health. The results of Coolsculpting are permanent because when the fat cells are frozen, they die and then are disintegrated to be flushed out of the body naturally. The human body has a fixed number of fat cells so when some are killed off through Coolsculpting, it is impossible for the body to regenerate new ones.
WHAT ARE THE BEST AREAS FOR COOLSCULPTING?
There are many areas of the body on which Coolsculpting works well, and most of these areas are problem spots for both women and men. Some of the best areas for Coolsculpting include:
- Under the buttocks
- Double chin
- Back fat
- Upper arms
HOW TO PREPARE FOR COOLSCULPTING
Prepare for your Coolsculpting treatment by avoiding anti-inflammatories one week prior since this could reduce the risk of bruising in the areas of treatment. On the day of treatment, ensure that you dress comfortably since you will be sitting or lying in one place for nearly an hour and wear loose-fitting clothing to allow access to targeted areas.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AND AFTER COOLSCULPTING?
When you arrive to your Coolsculpting appointment, the specialist will make sure that you are in a comfortable and relaxed position before placing the applicator and the gel pad on the area of your body which is to be targeted for fat removal. The Coolsculpting machine will be turned on and you may feel a slight suctioning sensation coming from the applicator before feeling an intense cold sensation in the beginning which, while not comfortable exactly, is not painful.
The feeling of cold will go away shortly since the area will go numb rather quickly through the application of cold temperatures. This is the time when you can relax and do things that you enjoy like reading a book or catch up on a Netflix show on your smart tablet. Once the cycles have been completed, the specialist will massage the treated area. This is usually described by patients as the most uncomfortable part of the treatment but it only lasts a few minutes and helps speed up the death and disintegration of the unwanted fat cells.
After your Coolsculpting appointment, you can expect some tenderness and swelling but you can carry on with your daily activities as usual if you wish. The mild side-effects typically go away within the next week and you can look forward to watching your results appear without any longer-term side-effects. You will see natural-looking gradual fat loss over the next three weeks to three months. This gives your skin time to adjust so that you don’t have any loose or sagging skin.
WHAT MEDICATIONS ARE INVOLVED IN COOLSCULPTING?
There are typically no medications involved or required in the Coolsculpting process.
WHAT DOES COOLSCULPTING DO TO MY BODY?
Coolsculpting reduces the number of fat cells located in particular areas of your body through a method called cryolipolysis. The process includes applying controlled and targeted cool temperatures to the body. Fat cells are more easily affected by cold temperatures than other cells so after a prolonged period of exposure to cold temperatures, the fat cells will crystalize and die.
After the fat cells have died, they begin to break down and dissolve so that they can be naturally cycled out of the body. The steady decrease in fat cells will make for a natural yet dramatically slimmer figure.
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL RECOVERY TIME AFTER COOLSCULPTING?
No downtime typically. Afterward the treatment, you will be able to return to your daily activities as normal. There is a recovery period but it does not need to interfere with your schedule whatsoever. There will possibly be some tenderness, redness, swelling, and/or tingling after your Coolsculpting treatment. These recovery side-effects are temporary and usually dissipate within a week.
WHEN CAN I RETURN TO WORK OR SCHOOL AFTER COOLSCULPTING?
You will be able to return to school or work almost directly after receiving a Coolsculpting treatment. You may wish to take the rest of the day off in order to rest; however, it is not necessary.
WHAT ARE POTENTIAL RISKS OR COMPLICATIONS OF COOLSCULPTING?
One of the reasons that Coolsculpting is so popular is because it is a non-invasive procedure which is extremely low risk. There is very little risk of any long term or serious side effects. The most common side effects associated with Coolsculpting treatments are mild and temporary. Some mild side effects that usually dissipate in a week or so include:
- Mild discomfort
- Mild bruising
These side effects usually last only a few days to a week or two.
A small percentage of patients experience a higher level of pain after treatment but your specialist can offer a pain medication prescription to help with that.
WHAT ARE POTENTIAL REWARDS OR BENEFITS OF COOLSCULPTING?
The potential rewards and/or benefits that come from Coolsculpting are almost immeasurable. This fat reduction treatment provides natural looking results over just a few weeks. There is no downtime to the procedure and the results are long-lasting (permanent if you maintain a healthy lifestyle).
The treatment is quick and can be done during a lunch break on a typical work day. The side effects are mild, minimal, and temporary since Coolsculpting is completely noninvasive.
